Practically everything we throw away can be recycled and/or reused in some
way. But  millions of tonnes of refuse goes into landfills each year, creating
problems with water, air and soil contamination, pests and bad odours.

If we learn to reduce the amounts of materials we buy, learn how to reuse
some of what we do and recycle the rest, we should, conceivably, be able to
reduce what goes to landfills by about 80%.  This is a lofty goal, but not one
that is totally out of reach.  We only need to learn the how, why, what and
where of it.
